Aurora appears when the auroral oval reaches your latitude. The oval expands equatorward as Kp rises. Rough table for your reference:
Kp 3+ — visible at 62°N (northern Norway, Alaska).
Kp 5+ — visible at 58°N (Scotland, southern Sweden, Vancouver).
Kp 6+ — visible at 54°N (Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Ottawa).
Kp 7+ — visible at 50°N (northern US, Berlin, London).
Kp 8+ — visible at 46°N (Milan, Portland OR, Toronto).
Kp 9 — visible below 46°N (Rome, Chicago, Madrid) — Carrington-class.
The Kp gives you the odds. Reality also needs: dark sky (get away from city lights), clear weather (Coronaut overlays cloud cover on the main dashboard), and looking in the right direction — poleward. Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust.
